The University was founded in 1290 by D. Dinis, being one of the oldest Universities in the World. Its importance to Science, its historical influence and the unforgettable architectural and cultural heritage that it represents makes the University of Coimbra a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
Founded in 1131 by the Order of the Canons of St. Augustine, the Monastery of Santa Cruz is the Royal Pantheon of D. Afonso Henriques and one of the most important monuments in Portugal. In the middle ages it was one of the most important schools, having as student the celebrated Santo António de Lisboa. In the 16th century was the object of Manueline style improvements, acquiring the current contours.

The construction of the Old Cathedral of Coimbra began in the 12th century and is closely related to the birth of Portugal. Built by D. Afonso Henriques, it is one of the most important monuments of Romanesque architecture in Portugal. It is an icon of the city of Coimbra and a bastion of the origins and Independence of Portugal.
Coimbra is one of the oldest Portuguese cities, holding the title of capital of the kingdom previously to Lisbon. It is known as the City of Students and by the tradition of its Fado of unique and unmistakable style. The landscapes of the banks of the Mondego and the centenary Historic Center make a visit to Coimbra mandatory.
Archaeological evidence proves the existence of human occupation in Conimbriga since the 9th century BC. With the presence of the Romans in the territory from the first century BC, Conimbriga flourished, turning into a prosperous city. Today it is possible to visit the Ruins and the Museum of Conimbriga, a living testimony of the Culture and Roman influence in Portugal.
